REPORT BY CENTRE COORDINATOR
The Centre has seen many changes during
the last twelve months. Following an initial lull in usage, we now have
regular users on a daily basis. The arrival of Bowling Community College to
provide educational classes has certainly contributed towards this, along
with the commitment and dedication of our regular volunteers. It is hoped
that more new ventures and activities will be implemented before the end of
the year in order to add to our programme to welcome not only the local
community but a wider audience.
In September 2004 the appointment of
Simon Loveitt, Church Related Community Worker (CRCW) added to our staff and
it is envisaged that he will be able to develop both St John’s Centre and
the URC greatly over time.
We have agreed a three-year Service
Level Agreement with Bowling Community College and are very pleased with the
working relationship we have built up. This agreement ensures that we can
remain a strong focal point in the community for the near future.
The Centre is being used on a regular
basis by other groups such as, Sure Start, BEEP, Bradford North PCT,
Airedale PCT, BMDC Jobsearch, Advice Workers and CATS (Carers & Toddlers) as
well as general ad-hoc events.
As was always intended, the Centre
provides worthwhile and some much needed facilities for the local community
and will hopefully continue to do so over the years.
WHAT’S HAPPENED
In the
past year the Centre has grown significantly. Including the Management
Committee we now have approximately fifteen volunteers and three members of
staff. This has made an enormous difference to what we have been able to
offer and has contributed to the increased number of people actually using
our Centre on a day-to-day basis.
PUBLICITY
St. John’s Centre has significantly
developed its publicity during the past 12 months.
Our most significant development has
been the building of our website;
www.stjohnsfagley.org.
It has been created in house and was
launched at the beginning of November 2004. It has already had over a
thousand ‘hits’.
Work has also begun on this website
becoming a hub for the community centres of the ‘Newlands’ area. A link
will be created, which will enable other community centres access to
publicity on the World Wide Web.
For community centres who wish to
develop this type of publicity further, St. John’s are prepared to work with
a group within the centre to create their own website, and to pass on the
skills to enable that group develop and maintain their own website. As St.
John’s has a huge capacity with their web hosting company, the other
community centres can share our capacity for free. The only cost to them
would be registering their own domain name (£8.99 per year)
